Spike in Workplace Amputations Triggers More Enforcement in Texas
On November 2, 2016, OSHA announced plans for a heightened focus on amputation hazards in Texas and the US.
There are far too many workplace accidents that result in amputations.
Amputations include the loss of a body part such as an arm, leg, foot, hand, or finger. These injuries are catastrophic to every victim. Last year, more workplace amputations were reported than previous years. This uptick in workplace amputations has prompted government regulators to improve workplace conditions in Texas and throughout the country.
Sadly, more than 2,700 amputations happen each year according to the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). And OSHA is doing something about it. According to their press release on 11/2/2016, “OSHA will conduct a surge of planned inspections immediately. Area offices will continue to open inspections in response to complaints, hospitalizations, and fatalities.”
OSHA’s renewed efforts for targeted enforcement and a “heightened focus” will be aimed at manufacturing plants in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. This should affect manufacturing and construction in Houston and throughout Southeast Texas.
OSHA’s spokesperson, Kelly C. Knighton, further explained…
“Our focus on amputation hazards reminds employers that health and safety should remain a top priority. We can only hope that this issue will reduce the potential for continued worker exposure to unguarded machines and equipment.
