A wrong-way driver is dead after colliding with a semi truck head on in a deadly crash in Willis, Texas.
The accident occurred just before midnight on Thursday night, in the southbound lanes of I-45 near FM 1097 in Montgomery County.
The wrong-way driver, a 21-year-old man, was driving a Honda Accord in Willis at the time of the crash. He was reported to have been driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-45 when the accident occurred. According to the Conroe Police Department, the wrong-way driver died at the scene.
A witness driving south in the southbound lanes pulled over when he saw the Accord driving the wrong way. After he passed the Honda Accord, he saw it hit the big rig, at which point it burst into flames. The driver of the 18-wheeler survived and was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The semi-truck, which was full of cotton, was destroyed by the fire.
It is unclear why or how the driver ended up driving the wrong way on the freeway, or where he entered the southbound lanes. The southbound lanes of I-45 were closed for several hours as firefighters worked to put out the fire and safety responders cleared the road.
