Three people, including a Sugar Land police officer, were injured in a series of crashes in Sugar Land early Sunday morning. The accidents occurred at around 2 a.m. in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 59, near Highway 90.
Police state that Sugar Land police officers were responding to a single vehicle accident that they believed was caused by an intoxicated driver. The driver told police that he lost control of his vehicle after hitting debris in the road, causing him to crash into the freeway wall. He was taken for a sobriety test.
Officer Ruben Munoz remained at the scene of the accident in his parked patrol vehicle to block off the HOV lanes as a tow truck driver worked to remove the driver’s disabled vehicle. The Sugar Land police officer was then subjected to a series of crashes. First, the officer’s vehicle was struck by a pickup truck. While emergency officials were rendering aid to the injured officer, a woman driving a Jeep crashed into the pickup truck.
Paramedics stated that Officer Munoz lost consciousness at the scene. The officer was Life Flighted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken to a nearby hospital via ambulance, and is expected to recover. The woman driving the jeep was also transported to a hospital via Life Flight, and remains in critical condition.
