RECALL ALERT: Daily Harvest Recalls Lentil Crumbles Following Hospitalizations
Meal prep delivery service Daily Harvest has issued a recall for their French Lentil and Leek Crumbles after customers reported severe health issues after eating them. Started in 2015, Daily Harvest describes itself as a food subscription company that exclusively offers produce that is pesticide-, fertilizer-, and synthetic-chemical-free.
Why are the Daily Harvest French Lentil and Leek Crumbles Being Recalled?
Customers that ate the French Lentil and Leek Crumbles have been complaining of severe pain and health issues online, including abdominal pain, liver problems, jaundice, fever, gastrointestinal inflammation, rashes, itchy skin, dark urine, spikes in enzyme levels, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Many users reported that they or their loved ones spent time in the hospital with liver damage after consuming the product, while some even reported they had their gallbladders removed.
In response to the claims, Daily Harvest issued a statement saying that they received reports of gastrointestinal issues from customers who had consumed their French Lentil and Leek Crumbles. “Out of an abundance of caution,” they warned, “please dispose of any French Lentil and Leek Crumbles and do not eat them.”
What is the Solution?
While some people have speculated that the food is contaminated with a class of mold called Aflatoxins, which is a known carcinogen and has been linked to cancer and liver damage, the exact reason for these issues is still unconfirmed.
On Sunday, a public statement posted by Daily Harvest stated that their pathogen and toxicology testing results have come back negative, but that they are “continuing to do extensive testing” with microbiologists, toxin and pathogen experts, and allergists, and will update once answers are found. The FDA is reportedly also conducting its own independent investigation. Customers who have been affected by the recall have been urged to contact the FDA, as well as Daily Harvest.
