Approximately 928,000 Toyota, Scion and Lexus Vehicles Recalled

Last month, Toyota announced that it will recall more than 928,000 cars, minivans, trucks, and SUVs. The recall is part of the final phase of Toyota’s massive fix to replace faulty airbag inflators produced by defunct airbag supplier, Takata.

During earlier phases of the replacement, driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators were replaced using inflators of the same design. The replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation after long-term exposure to high humidity and high-temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may cause sharp metal fragments to shoot across a vehicle’s cabin, striking the driver and other passengers, resulting in serious injury or death. At least 24 people have been killed by faulty inflators worldwide, leaving hundreds injured.

In a statement Toyota said that they began notifying affected owners via mail-in mid-November, instructing them to bring their vehicles into a nearby service center. Technicians will replace the airbag inflators at no cost.
