Oil & Gas Well Site Accident: Oil Rig Workers Suffer Burn Injuries in Explosion on Drilling Rig in Karnes County TX
On the morning of Tuesday, September 24, 2013, an explosion occurred on an oil rig near Falls City in Karnes County, Texas. At the time, 6 workers were checking a pressure valve when it burst scalding each of the men with hot water and steam. While two of the men were driven to a local hospital, the other 4 were transported by helicopter to a San Antonio hospital where they are being treated for severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
The explosion occurred on a rig that is operated by Freeport-McMoRan Oil and Gas Company on Farm-to-Market Road 791 and County Road 207. This is a company based out of Phoenix, Arizona with an office in Houston. Dwayne Villanueva, the Karnes County Sheriff, has been investigating the incident. He announced on September 26th that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Texas Railroad Commission were to come to the scene and to investigate the cause. Sherriff Villanueva states that accidents such as these have been happening all too often since the Eagle Ford drilling boom occurred two years ago.
