Construction Worker Suffers Fatal Work Injury in League City – Deadly Reminder of the Dangers Texas Construction Workers Face
A construction worker suffered a fatal work injury in League City, Texas on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013. According to news reports, including ABC Local and The Galveston County Daily News, the 49-year-old man was working on a project to widen League City Parkway when the compactor he has driving overturned, pinning him underneath the equipment.
The incident occurred about 5 p.m. at League City Parkway and Cottonwood Creek. Witnesses pulled the worker out from under the compactor and performed CPR until an emergency crew arrived and transported him by ambulance to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. The injured construction worker died hours later. An autopsy is pending.
Construction Work in Texas a Dangerous Job
This tragic fatal work injury is yet another reminder of the dangers Texas construction workers face each day on the job. In fact, according to a report release earlier this year, more construction workers die in Texas than in any other state. The report, “Build A Better Texas: Construction Working Conditions in the Lone Star State” released by the Austin-based Workers Defense Project, also says “one in every five workers surveyed reported suffering a workplace injury that required medical attention.”
The report further states that “sixty percent of workers have never received basic safety training, and researchers discovered numerous safety violations on almost every worksite they visited.” According to the report “state and federal agencies charged with enforcing safety and wage standards have inadequate resources to effectively investigate violations on all Texas worksites.”
