Nine people have died after a Dodge pickup truck collided with their van in Andrews, Texas. The crash occurred on Tuesday evening, at about 8:17 p.m. on a two-lane road about nine miles from Andrews, Texas.

The van, a 2017 Ford Transit, was heading northbound on FM 1788, and towing a box-trailer. The accident occurred when the driver of the pickup truck, heading southbound, crossed the center line and drove into the northbound lane.

The pickup truck collided with the van head-on, and officials say that both vehicles caught on fire. The driver of the Dodge truck, a 13-year-old boy, and his passenger, a 38-year-old man, were killed in the collision.

The van was carrying members of The University of the Southwest’s golf team from a golf tournament they attended in Midland, Texas back to New Mexico. Six student-athletes and the golf coach were killed in the accident.

Two other students in the vehicle were transported from Andrews to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas following the crash. They are said to be in critical condition, and suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision.

Experts are still working to uncover the circumstances that lead up to the crash, but reports indicate that the front left tire, a spare, had failed, causing the driver to lose control of his vehicle.
